A Deer Resistant Front Yard Rescue
helping people plant right, water less and garden more
Designing a deer resistant garden means flowers can be unreliable, so Susan likes to focus on foliage plants for color and ornamental grasses to provide texture and movement (not to mention, they're deer proof!). Here are two books that provided inspiration for this design.
This front yard was badly in need of a makeover that would discourage deer and handle full sun while requiring minimal water.
Instead of a traditional lawn, Carex divulsa was used to create a cool green effect. The original flagstone planters and walkways were replaced with white stucco walls and pavers in muted tones tl show off the dramatic architecture of the home.
Rathr than overload the front yard with flowers likely to become deer food, much of the color comes from red and blue foliage plants that accent the grey/black/white color palette of the house and hardscape.
Flower color comes from cool blue lavenders and nepetas, offset by drifts of dusty rose and touches of yellow.
